Peter Snowden has Khan on triple crown path with Silver Slipper a starting point

Peter Snowden believed he had a colt to go a long way into the autumn in Khan after the Breeders Plate, but whether he can match the sheer speed of She Will Reign in Saturday’s Silver Slipper at Rosehill, he has his doubts.

“She is very fast that filly and he will be chasing her all the way over the 1100m. I would be delighted if he could win but I think he will be at his best when they step up in trip,” Snowden said. “She is a running filly and has advantage on Saturday.

“Khan is a magnificent type of horse that will relax and I think will stretch out over more ground.”

Khan showed his strength in his only start in the Breeders Plate as he gunned down Condor Heroes late as they charged around the Randwick 1000m in October. He will be faced with a similar task against She Will Reign, but if she wilts at all the Exceed And Excel colt will be ready to pounce.

Snowden decided to miss the Magic Millions with the colt to concentrate on the triple crown of the Golden Slipper, Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes and has been mindful of that in his planning to get Khan to relax.

“We have given him a long preparation and grounding for this first run and it is not the target. We are thinking of races that are coming up in the next couple of months but he is still ready to run a good race,” he said. “He will be finding the line but I think he will be better suited the further they go.”

Snowden has a strong hand in the Hobartville Stakes with Acatour, which returns defending an unblemished record first-up.

“It is definitely the best field he has faced first-up but he has always had good quality about him,” Snowden said. “He is going to step up in trip this preparation and how far he will go we will just have to wait and see.

“He has only had the one trial but is forward enough to run a good race and it will tell a lot about where we are going.”

Artistry also returns from a spell for team Snowden in the Millie Fox Stakes after finishing her spring with a group 3 success in Melbourne.

“She is one of those mares that has stepped up with each of her preparations,” Snowden said. “She has a bit of sticky gate [in barrier 12] but she will put herself in the race.”
