Chinan Boardriders Battle 2017: James McMorland leads Frenchmans to national finals

JAMES McMorland was the star asFrenchmans Boardriders booked their place in the n Boardriders Battle national finals on Friday.

McMorland, Dan Frodsham, Dale Thomas, Danielle Hancock, Lincoln Robards and Ethan Hartge scored6600 points in host regiontrials for a wildcard into this weekend’s event at Newcastle to edge out the East End (5825), Bay Area (5662)andRedhead (5050) clubs.

McMorland proved the difference forFrenchmans in the finalteams event, scoring an eight-pointer late as their “power surfer”, but Frodsham said the former Surfest Pro wildcard winner was a standout throughout at Newcastle.

“James was our man all day,” Frodsham said.“He just nailed it, getting sevens and eights, winning all his skins and getting that last wave eight.”

Frenchmans take on Queenscliff,D’Bah and 2016 winners North Narrabeen in the teams and women’s first round on Saturday. They face North Narrabeen and North Avalon in the skins.

Frodsham, Frenchmans’ over-35 surfer, said the club was excited to get through to the broadcast national final, which has $85,000 in prize money up for grabs.

“It’s an amazing concept to be part of,” he said.

McMorland was relieved to help get his club through to the final.

“The team event is definitely way more nerve racking but you just want to get it done for your club and we knew we could get the score,” McMorland said.
